in recent years, one way appraisers have added to their own skill sets and at the same time given back to their profession has been by serving on their state appraisal board. Among Appraisal Institute members who are getting that opportunity right now are Floridians Cynthia Wright, MAI, of Tallahassee, and Michael Rogers, MAI, SRA, of Pensacola. Gov. Charlie Crist appointed the pair to the Florida Real Estate Appraisers Board. Their term began June 12, 2007, and will end Oct. 31, 2010.
Wright, as a seasoned incumbent who has served on the Board since 2000 as a member, vice-chairman and chairman, knows what to expect, while rookie Rogers, who's never served in a public capacity before, says he has no idea what his specific responsibilities will be. Rogers had originally applied to serve on the Appraisal Board several years ago, but when he was not chosen, he decided he had "tried" and could rest easy. However, Wright encouraged him to apply again because she was aware some members were not going to seek reappointment. Rogers says he has "always felt that the state appraisal boards were places where some meaningful changes can be implemented to improve the quality of the appraisal product being produced."
