The number of Spanish heritage language programs (SHL) established in institutes of higher learning is increasing in the United States due to the growing percentage of Hispanics in the population coupled with the realization that the language skills they possess are of importance to the students themselves and the nation. Foreign language programs have a wealth of studies upon which to draw for creating the pedagogical materials necessary for teaching students who are learning a second language. Heritage language programs, being late comers to the scene, do not have benefit of the same wealth of available literature and studies, though that is now being addressed rapidly by scholars.
