THE beef industry continues to move toward a decision to double the beef checkoff as the board of directors of the National Cattlemen's Beef Assn. (NCBA) accepted a checkoff study group's report July 20 to begin an industry-wide dialogue on the matter.

The increase, which would need to be approved by Congress and by beef cattle and dairy producers in a referendum, would raise the checkoff from $1 per head in all cattle selling transactions to $2 or more. The study group actually concluded that for the checkoff to have the same "buying power" of 20 years ago, when it was established, the assessment would need to be $2.26, taking into account inflation and the additional beef tonnage being produced today.
