While en route from Indianapolis, Ind., (KUMP), to Menomonie, Wisc., (KLUM), I heard the following exchange:

Cessna 40Y: "Center, uh, what was that waypoint after, uh, Lima November Romeo? I don't have it here."

Chicago Center: "Four Zero Yankee, you are cleared via direct Lone Rock, Victor Two Four, Rochester."

40Y (after a pause): "That's V as in Victor?"

Center: "Four Zero Yankee. Affirmative."

40Y [after another pause]: "Um, I don't have that in my GPS here."

Center: "Tell you what; after Lone Rock, cleared direct Rochester."

My non-pilot wife, following the chatter while taking care of three small children in the back of the plane, commented acidly, "Even...
