How many times have you stood in a war protest or peace vigil and been told: You're wasting your time. There's always been war. IT'S HUMAN NATURE!

It's clear that our species is capable of committing massive acts of violence. So if we don't believe this is the best human beings can do, what is our understanding of the world we're trying to transform?

For the past nine or ten millennia, most cultures have been organized within a patriarchal or dominator world view. This paradigm gives unequal value--dominant or subordinate status--to basic human differences or characteristics, and exercises power and distributes resources accordingly. In such a system, power is generally defined as being over others, not just individuals but categories of people.
