Today, the UK affiliate of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's largest animal rights organisation, fired off letters to Tyrone GAA and GAA. PETA Europe is asking Tyrone GAA to "do the right thing and publicly end any current and future association with Cavlan, condemn his link to cruelty to animals and dogfighting, and develop a policy to forbid anyone convicted of a crime related to cruelty to animals from playing in association with Tyrone GAA for a minimum of five years." PETA Europe is also asking GAA to make a strong statement condemning dog fighting by implementing the same five year policy.

Poorva Joshipura, Director PETA Europe, writes, "Cavlan's name will forever remind the public of dogs who are forced to tear one another apart in a blood-splattered pit, something from an earlier, less enlightened time. The public may love football, but they love dogs far more."

Cavlan's actions seem to echo that of American football player Michael Vick's. Vick, a star of the Atlanta Falcons football team, was suspended indefinitely by the US National Football League (NFL) after pleading guilty to dogfighting charges.
