Jury selection is one of the most critical tasks an attorney performs. It is a process by which crucial decisions must be made under uncertain conditions. You usually get very little information about each prospective juror, and it is difficult to make prudent decisions about which jurors will be fair.

In practice, plaintiff attorneys have too few opportunities to develop the intuition necessary to build skill in the art and science of jury selection. What's more, courts appear to be moving toward placing strict time limits on attorney-conducted voir dire, giving attorneys even less chance to secure necessary information to make intelligent decisions during jury selection.

Scientific Jury Selection, by Joel Lieberman and Bruce Sales, is a welcome addition to the body of work on this topic. The book reviews the existing research on jury selection and is an excellent resource for any attorney interested in understanding the limited scientific research on jury selection.
