ALONG WITH ELECTRICITY, water and gas compressed air has accurately been described as the 'fourth utility'. Apart from its many uses as a remote source of power in the hazard-prone mining and construction industries compressed air is vital to the safe running of many of Africa's commercial and industrial processes. This usually means access is needed to a reliable source of electrical power.

That word 'safe' is especially important in industry. Compressed air as used in African manufacturing and packaging today is usually supplied by a relatively quiet compressor that runs continually off mains electrical power, with no facilities needed to vent the toxic exhaust fumes of a diesel installation. So at the point of use where water may be present, as in many food-, textile- processing and mechanical assembly operations, there is no possible danger of liquids and electricity meeting--a potentially fatal combination.
