1. President Donna Henderson opened the session with an introduction exercise followed by the presentation of the agenda. Robert's Rules of Order were suspended for this meeting, with the proviso that we remain conscientious to completing our agenda.

2. David Zimpfer offered a summary of the recent history of having the regional President-Elects attend this meeting in order to maintain continuity within the organization.

3. President's Report

Donna Henderson presented the Council members with a brief overview of the intent and direction of the meeting. She presented to the Council her "Considerations" (see packet PowerPoint slides) as a beginning point for our discussion and deliberation. These included encouragement to focus on the vision statement throughout our discussions, to emphasize our abilities, to think forward 2 years, and to provide us with options. Donna encouraged members to be thoughtful in reviewing the Budget items, especially as related to the possibility of employing a part-time executive assistant.

4. Past President's Report

Steve Feit reported on the nominees for the upcoming election. Nominees for the office of President-Elect-Elect are Harriett Glosoff and Kent Becker. Nominees for the office of Secretary-Elect-Elect are Patricia Kerstner and Tracy Leinbaugh.

Steve also stated his goals for the coming year are to complete the bylaws revisions as directed by the membership at the Kansas City meeting.

5. Treasurer's Report

David Zimpfer presented a comprehensive overview of the current financial status of the organization (see Treasurer's Report). David discussed the usual increase in expenditures in June/July associated with the summer Council meeting. David emphasized that we would end the year "in the black."

David pointed out that we are losing more Regular members than Student members, suggesting that we focus our membership activity on retention, not merely recruitment.

David also offered that it would be prudent for us to attend to how we derive our monies and what we need to do differently or additionally to generate revenues to support all that we want to do.

David discussed the transfer of funds to the Vanguard Wellesley Income Fund and indicated that this is a more secure environment for our assets, a "couch potato" fund with limited risks and modest rewards.

Carla Bradley tendered a question about the benefits of this approach in contrast to a more diversified fixed investment strategy. Discussion followed, concluding with the presentation of ideas, suggestions, and recommendations to the Finance Committee for review, discussion, and action.

David concluded his report with some queries for the Council, including the rationale for a healthy reserve; the course and development of our product lines, especially our pending arrangements with Lahaska Press; and the future direction of the CES journal.

6. Governing Council Representative's Report

Pam Paisley reported her intention to attend all upcoming Council meetings. She stated she has been asked to chair an ACA task force...
