Librarians and scholars may be accustomed to consulting Annals of the Metropolitan Opera (AMO) (Gerald Fitzgerald, ed. [New York: Metropolitan Opera Guild, 1989]) for information on Metropolitan Opera performances and performers. The MetOpera Database contains the same information as AMO, but with its coverage brought forward to last night, and with new methods of searching that make research quicker and easier. The problem with AMO was that as a print volume it was static, superb for a print source but dated by publication time. The MetOpera Database inundates the scholar with information, perhaps more than some would like, but the researcher will soon learn to use the database in an efficient manner. There are differences, but all of the information from AMO appears to be available in the database.

The Metropolitan Opera Company likes to be considered a first class operation in all that they do and this Web site carries on that fine tradition. The Met's family of Web sites encompasses the company, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, an education site, the Opera Shop, and the Guild's publication, Opera News. Every month a number of recordings and live productions are reviewed only at the Opera News Web site. These are available to Opera News subscribers and Metropolitan Opera Guild members.
