Article Excerpt Having grown up in Germany, I first encountered the Ms. problem as an exchange student in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1978/79. Whenever I introduced myself, I was asked, "Miss or Mrs.?.... Ms.!" I'd say, and they'd reply with something equivalent to "Huh?"
In 2007, Ms. has come a long way, but not nearly far enough. People still ask, "Miss or Mrs.?" Ms. seemed like such a good idea: a term to function parallel to Mr., supposed to end the automatic labeling of women by marital status. What happened?
There has been some progress since the late 70s, but not much.
Here's a suggestion that could solve this issue permanently, a solution that has proven 100% successful in Germany. There, too, feminists rebelled against asymmetric forms of address for women and men, labeling women...
