Achievements
The Oregon Fire U14 girls basketball team recently placed second at the AAU West Coast Nationals in Reno, Nev., while playing in the U15 division. Drawing primarily from Churchill, Sheldon and Thurston high school areas, plus one player each from Marist and Bend, the team won three games by 30 points each before dropping the championship contest.
Three-on-three street basketball tournaments are attracting numerous local teams to Oregon cities from Medford to Hillsboro. Local Little League baseball and softball teams had mixed success in their state tournaments. The 9-10-year-old West Emerald boys lost four or five straight games at Medford, while the 10-11-year-old West Emerald boys were honored as the tournament's "classiest team" in their double-elimination loss at Gresham. The 11-12-year-old West Emerald boys beat Emerald East three games to two in District 9 play to qualify for the state tournament in Portland.
The 9-10-year-old girls' combined team lost in double elimination at Redmond, but the 10-11-year-old combined team won the state championship at Redmond with a string of 19-4, 21-0, 15-7 and 13-8 wins.
