The fro is gone.

His famous bushy mustache is gone, too, replaced by short, white-gray whiskers.

But when you hear him speak, it's clear this guy is the same Mr. Kah-tare we all know and love.

In the 28 years since "Welcome Back Kotter" went off the air, its star, Gabe Kaplan, has largely stayed out of showbiz. He says it wasn't by choice; no one offered him any decent roles.

"If I would have been offered really great roles, I would have done them," he said during a recent stop in Chicago to promote his new book, "Kotter's Back."
