As can be seen in the following graphs, South Dakota economic indicators are trending downwards with one exception, the state's total personal income. Total personal income increased by 0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2007 compared to the fourth quarter of 2006. A major source of the weak growth in personal income was the sharp downturn in farm earnings. Lower crop cash receipts accounted for most of the 55 percent decrease in farm proprietors' income. Earnings in the nonfarm industries grew 1.7 percent, outpacing the 0.2 percent increase for total personal income by 1.5 percentage points.
