Article Excerpt Mississippi's professional engineers, interns and students will gather at the Jackson Hilton Feb. 11-13 to discuss regulations, hot-button issues and educational opportunities during the Mississippi Engineering Society's (MES) annual winter meeting.
"Our annual winter meeting is a very important one, as we head into the legislative session," said Mary Ellen Odom, executive director of the 700-member society. "We expect a record turnout."
One of Mississippi engineers' primary legislative focus issues will be renewing the "registration law," which will sunset in 2004, said Odom.
"We need to make a few general housekeeping changes and this is a good time to do it," she said.
Judy Adams, executive director of the American Council of Engineering Companies-Mississippi (ACEC-MS), an organization that represents more than 100 firms of all sizes and engineering disciplines, said she doesn't anticipate significant opposition to the bill.
"What engineers do affects all segments of society, from clean drinking water to building roads and bridges, so when our registration law comes up, much is involved," she said. "As a 'good lobbyist,' I cannot tell you where I expect the opposition to...
