Monitoring invades privacy
As an older citizen, I was disturbed and incensed by the front-page article regarding electronic devices placed in homes to monitor the elderly in order to study their advance toward senility and Alzheimer's disease (Register-Guard, June 19).
The method smacks of a flagrant invasion of privacy. So what if I walk more slowly and take extra time to dress? Who determines that this is dangerous to myself or others? As far as being forgetful about taking medication, this is a more serious issue, but one that can be determined by other means.
The important question is, how does this electronic method compare with that of a concerned individual (physician, relative, friend or neighbor) who actually knows the person in question making a more subjective or medical evaluation? And how much better would this be?
Forget about technological surveillance. If that is the future, the Golden Years become more tarnished than ever. This senior citizen votes thumbs down!
