AL ASAD, Iraq -- For the 323rd Engineer Detachment (Fire Fighting), an Army Reserve unit based in El Dorado, Kan., mobilization meant 14 months of hazardous, dangerous and critical real world missions for the 20 Soldiers that deployed into theater. At least half of the Soldiers were professional firemen in their civilian careers.

Mobilizing on Jan. 24, 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the 323rd deployed to Kuwait on April 13, 2003 and arrived the next day at Camp Wolf, the theater's processing point for all incoming and outgoing Soldiers.
