Education advocates set sights on future.

SALEM - For all its victory party trappings, Thursday's signing ceremony for a package of landmark education bills was notable for two words that were never spoken.

Mission accomplished.

The Legislature had ended its 74th session less than an hour earlier, and the mood in the Capitol rotunda was celebratory. Still, as much time was spent talking about the need to further increase education spending in the next session as was spent lauding the package of 2007-09 funding bills awaiting Gov. Ted Kulongoski's pen.

With a smiling crowd pressed around him, Senate President Peter Courtney described the session's education accomplishments as a first step that legislators must follow up in 2009.

"There's so much more that needs to be done," he said.
