Put the cats and dogs under the bed, if they don't just crawl there themselves. It's that time of year again.

Fourth of July time. Time for loud noises. Time to celebrate our nation's 231st birthday.

Gonna take a big cake. Gonna be a big bang.

If you're looking for something to do Wednesday, as the holiday inconveniently falls smack dab in the middle of the work week this year, don't look for Art & the Vineyard. Lane County's premiere July 4 weekend event doesn't begin until a week from today.

But you can still party Wednesday in Alton Baker Park. The annual Freedom Festival will be there, as always, with live music and fireworks.

And it doesn't get much more all-American than baseball on our nation's birthday, so you could always try and squeeze into Civic Stadium, 20th Avenue and Oak Street, to watch the Eugene Emeralds battle Yakima. The game will be followed by a fireworks show that just seems to get better every year.

For those who like a little pre-pyrotechnic exercise there's the annual Butte to Butte 10-kilometer road run, which begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Spencer Butte Middle School, 43rd and Donald streets. For more information, call 484-9883 or visit www.buttetobutte.org.
