Don't force fluoride on people

Fluoridated water is not the only way to avoid tooth decay.

For all of my 18 years, I've brushed my teeth with glorified sawdust paste (Peelu, a non-fluoridated toothpaste), have gone to the dentist only when absolutely necessary and have avoided fluoride like the plague. I brush my teeth at least twice a day, floss at least once a day and have never once had a cavity or any other tooth decay.

I'm not exactly rich, and drink almost exclusively water. Hence, I take particular offense to the cockamamie notion in Lohring Miller's June 21 guest viewpoint that everyone who doesn't want fluoridated water should have to pony up the money to buy bottled water. If Miller is so concerned about the poor and equality, why is it so acceptable to make pure water a luxury of the middle class?

I don't know about you, but I don't like the idea of having watered-down rat poison in my water, and I don't feel as if I should have to pay extra to avoid it. It would be an atrocity to expose everyone to the potential health risks of fluoride only to find out later that the danger is real. So why risk it?

I say we take the money Miller & Friends want to spend on fluoridating everyone's water and make toothbrushes, floss and fluoride pills permanently available to everyone for free instead. They can have their fluoride and eat it, too - just so long as...
