Interested municipalities submitted RFPs (request for proposals) to the Governor's Commission by the April 5 deadline for the site of the planned $50million National Civil Rights Museum.

Even though the commission had not made a decision by press time, the City of Jackson is a favored site. It is, after all, home of the infamous Tougaloo Nine, black students from Tougaloo College who were arrested, charged and convicted of breaching the peace after they entered the city's segregated main library and began reading in March 1961. The event marked one of the first high-profile efforts to break down segregation barriers in Mississippi.

The Freedom Riders' arrival in Jackson propelled the city into the national spotlight.
