Single-payer system offers health care fix

* I appreciated Crain's publishing Sister Judith Ann Karam's May 21 Personal View in support of the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), and a subsequent June 4 letter from Michael Bond opposing expanded SCHIP eligibility. During this pre-presidential election period, health care reform in various forms is clearly on the national agenda. Coming choices are absolutely necessary, but complex. We need media coverage such as that in Crain's to aid public understanding.

Mr. Bond's comments in opposition to SCHIP expansion and government programs compel me to respond directly to two of his points: that SCHIP provides a "very low quality'' program, and that a single-party payer system will lead to "more government'' and "rationing.''

On the issue of quality, health care providers and institutions do not alter the quality of care they provide based on payer status. Both legal and ethical principles require the provision of care that meets community standards regardless of...
