Casa Santo Domingo, one of the most luxurious and charming hotels in the colonial Guatemalan city of Antigua, found an innovative solution to what would have been a labor conflict. A few years ago, labor unions began pressing the hotel for higher salaries. The hotel, where overnight rates often exceeded monthly salaries, countered with an offer to turn employees into business people. The result: The hotel kick-started one of the most prosperous arts and crafts stores in the city.

In 1996, the hotel created The Solidarity Association of the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo (Asolicasad), a cooperative made up of hotel employees.
