Several years ago, state tourism leaders decided to parlay the state's strong musical heritage into a tourism product that would lure toe-tappers and hip shakers to the nooks and crannies throughout Mississippi that birthed the blues, country and rock and roll.

That plan is paying off. Of the 11 historical markers unveiled so far on the Mississippi Blues Trail, most are located in the Delta, drawing Coahoma and Tunica casino guests off the beaten path "to stay a little longer," explained Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) Tourism Director Craig Ray. "'That's been our goal, to get them here and keep them here."

Ray, who pointed out the Blues Trail represents "a large crossover of music of different kinds throughout the state that makes our music heritage so unique," has been busy attending historical marker unveilings, most recently May 3 in Meridian lot Jimmie Rodgers and May 16 in Greenwood for Robert Johnson.
