The United States currently faces a shortage of radiologic technologists that can only be described as critical. It affects all specialties, including radiography, mammography, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, computed tomography (CT) and radiation therapy. To make matters worse, no relief for this shortage is projected in the near future. The U.S. Department of Labor expects a 21% to 35% shortage of professionals in the imaging sciences between now and 2010. A 35% shortage leaves more than 1 in 3 jobs vacant. This kind of shortfall results in excess work for practicing professionals, as well as a potentially underserved patient population.
