Carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) is a remarkable refrigerant. Until the 1950s it was used in air-conditioning and many refrigeration applications, including shipboard refrigeration; however, it fell out of favor with the advent of synthetic refrigerants. The very high discharge pressures and, in particular, the performance degradation due to the transcritical operation at severe outdoor conditions, led to significant capacity and efficiency degradation.
