COTTAGE GROVE - With the grip on the Sky-Em League - held by Marist so tightly for so long - finally loosened, the other contending girls basketball teams are rising to the forefront.

That was never more evident than Friday night, when No. 4 Junction City outlasted Cottage Grove 36-34 before a raucous contingent at Cottage Grove High School to remain in contention for the league title - which no team other than Marist has won since 1996.

Afterward, Tigers coach Craig Lannom needed a few moments to catch his breath from all the excitement.

"The people here tonight saw how much fun girls basketball can be," said Lannom, whose team improved to 16-1 overall and remained tied for first at 7-1 in league. "That was a great atmosphere, and a heck of a ballgame."

The game was tied at 29 with two minutes left before Junction City's Amy Parker, who had 10 points, picked off a pass at midcourt and cruised for a layup.
