South Eugene reached one of its goals Friday night.

The Axemen, ranked fifth in this week's Associated Press poll, finished off a perfect month with a 65-50 win over No. 8 Marshfield in Midwestern League boys basketball at South Eugene High School.

"I'm proud of what we accomplished in January," said South Eugene coach Dave Hancock, whose Axemen went 6-0 during the month. "We wanted to win the month of January and we did that. Now we have to reset what we want to do heading into three straight road games."

The Axemen are firmly set as the favorite to accomplish their goal of winning the league title. At 9-0, South has a two-game lead over Churchill and is three games ahead of Marshfield and Thurston.

"I think we put ourselves in position to win it," Hancock said. "Now it's up to us."

South Eugene scored 10 consecutive points midway through the first quarter to take a 16-8 lead, and the Pirates never got closer than six the rest...
