Wendell Widener
The funeral will be held Feb. 2 for Wendell Widener of Bend, formerly of Junction City, who died Jan. 26 of age-related causes. He was 92.
Widener was born Sept. 12, 1911, in Junction City to Walter and Helen Aylesworth Widener. He married Lucille Wilford in 1940. She later died.
He lived in this area until 2001, when he settled in Bend.
He worked in the lumber industry for most of his life and told interesting stories of life in the logging camps around Mapleton. He later worked in local sawmills.
In his younger days he enjoyed hopping freight trains with his friends and riding to Oakridge and Portland and back. He was an outdoorsman and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed his large garden and sharing his produce with people. He had an intense interest in farming and he especially enjoyed caring for animals.
Survivors include two sons, Joe of Chatsworth, Calif., and Steven of Medford; four daughters, Arlene Gorgas of Carlton, Helen Skaggs of Portland, Marilyn Duren of Bend and Wendie Wilbur of Raymond, Maine; 24 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A son, Phillip, and two grandsons, Robert Widener and Neil Lent, died previously.
Monday's service will be held at noon at Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene. Burial will be at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene.
Evelyn Mattingly
A memorial service will be held Feb. 6 for Evelyn L. Mattingly of Eugene, who died Jan. 24 of age-related causes. She was 93.
Mattingly was born March 31, 1910, in Chicago to Frank and Lucille Vanderlist Hangleitner. She married Robert Mattingly in Cicero, Ill., on Nov. 17, 1934. He died in 1989.
She lived in Chicago before settling in Eugene in 1963.
