BROWNSVILLE - A U.S. Army sergeant killed this week in a roadside bombing in Iraq joined the military despite resistance from his family.

Travis A. Moothart, 23, of Brownsville enlisted in April 2000. He was sent to Iraq in September.

He died Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated in Khalidiya, west of Baghdad. Moothart, a lightweight-vehicle mechanic, was driving an unarmored vehicle as part of a convoy when the bomb exploded, his family said. Two of his passengers also were killed.
