Developers want to get their hooks into the 250 acres of real estate formerly known as the Union Pacific rail yard in north Eugene.

They're meeting with city planners, talking to the railroad's real estate division and figuring out how to avoid - or cope - with the age-old pollution on the site.

Potential buyers are going about their research quietly. City and railroad officials refuse to say who's doing the inquiring, but they will say that interest in the semi-mothballed site has picked up in recent weeks.

An industrial developer is eyeing about 100 acres of the yard, a Eugene land broker said. A business on the north side of the yard wants to nip off 20 acres to improve access to his property.

For civic leaders who want to see Eugene's industrial sector expand, opening up the rail yard - between Highway 99 and the Northwest Expressway north of Chambers Street - would be an important development.
