Tourism remains a vital cog in Mississippi's economic wheel, and had a significant impact in fiscal year 2006 (FY06), despite the loss of 8,753 rooms from the state's hotel inventory of 55,079, and the loss of seven state-licensed casinos. (As of February 1, the number of casinos had increased to 27, only two less than pre-Hurricane Katrina.)

Highlights of the annual tourism impact report, released in February by the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) Tourism Division, include:

* Mississippi received 20.8 million total visitors in FY06.
