Stakeholder engagement has become more and more important as organisations witness the necessity to engage with all aspects of their business. It is questionable whether the effort it requires is worth it. Here we examine GRI's stakeholder engagement process and its possible future.

GRI exists through its stakeholders

GRI is one of only a few organisations to task stakeholders with the creation of its main products; and one of fewer to institutionalize its stakeholder engagement process into its governance structure. The main outcome of this process, the GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, represent lengthy, committed, rounds of research, discussion, feedback and consensus-seeking with stakeholders across geographically dispersed business, investment, accountancy, public-sector, academic, labour and civil-society organisations.
