Sensors
An important piece of the system to understand is the sensor itself. The sensor is what takes the place of the traditional film and determines the potential diagnostic quality of the obtained image. Two types of direct digital sensors are available: the CCD and the CMOS. The CCD (charged coupled device) requires a charge transfer from the sensor to the computer. It was initially the best choice for the best image, and still is a good technology.
The CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor system) is now considered by some to be the system of choice. It does not require a charge transfer, which increases the sensor reliability and lifespan. It also requires less energy to capture the image and is less expensive to operate.
