Montessori charter school application denied

In a move that dismayed many Children's Choice Montessori parents and employees, the Springfield School Board on May 21 rejected the school's bid for sponsorship as a charter school.

The 3-2 vote contradicted a recommendation from district staff to approve the proposal, which would have allowed Children's Choice to open in the fall as the district's first independent, public charter school.

It left parents who were counting on keeping their children there with no clear options for the fall.

Founder and Executive Director Carla McQuillan said she'll appeal. Should the board deny a second time, she said she would only reluctantly consider operating as a private school.
