Not everyone who owns a historic home gets to hear juicy tidbits about the neighborhood from long-ago residents, but Bruce Berg, who has owned the stately, century-old house at 448 D St. for 28 years, has been lucky.

He's met Shirley Seavey Deardorff, who lived in the house at the corner of Fifth and D streets as a child - the house is known officially as the Jess Seavey House after her father - and enjoyed pointing out details about how the place had been then.

Their last communication came early in March, when Berg received a letter from Deardorff, with more memories about early...
