I have been writing a column on terrorism for Annals for the 6 years post-9/11. I still cannot go out without seeing a newspaper article or a book reporting terrorism's effect on families and children.

Why do the tragic attacks keep happening? Family therapy, which uses a systemic approach to find conclusions about violence against children and families, can be instructive. To find the cause, it is necessary to transcend the violence and apply the basic reasoning of psychotherapy.

Terrorists have a value system that enables them to justify to themselves the killing of innocent people.
