Toyota, BMW and Honda are the most effective North American automakers in encouraging and implementing suppliers' innovations, according to the suppliers themselves.

And suppliers tend to offer their best innovations to automakers that are most likely to use - and pay for - them.

Those are among the findings of the third Automotive News Suppliers' Choice survey, released this month. The survey, conducted for Automotive News by J.D. Power and Associates, queried top supplier executives last winter and this spring.

In the aggregate, automakers are doing a somewhat better job of fostering innovation than they did in the 2004 survey.

Among the dramatic changes since 2004: Toyota made a big leap in its supplier relationships and overtook BMW, which was the top pick in 2004.
