A burgundy velour futon may be the smartest acquisition Anne Lavoie has made for her 16-month-old Apple Valley Ford store.

Three or four nights a week, Lavoie bunks down on that futon in her office at her dealership in Lunenburg, Mass., a town of 9,634 about 40 miles northwest of Boston. The sleepovers allow the 43-year-old dealer to roll out of bed already at work, where she showers and gets started on another day of cars, paperwork and customers.

The long days are necessary because Lavoie achieved her longtime dream of opening her own Ford store just as Ford Motor Co. hit severe business problems. Now she's one of many dealers coping with Ford's declining market share.

The time away from her home and family 100 miles away in Connecticut is a sacrifice. But Lavoie is willing to make it, for now. She intends to give Apple Valley Ford, which she bought and renamed in January 2006, the strongest foundation possible.
