CARACAS, Venezuela, May 31, 2007 (IPS/GIN) -- Governments in Latin America and the Caribbean are increasingly passing bans on smoking in public spaces, making life a little more difficult for the region's 150 million smokers.

The measures are aimed at protecting nonsmokers from secondhand smoke. Health advocates have hailed the measures, but they warn that the bans must also be accompanied by consciousness-raising and efforts at persuasion. "This is the tendency that civil society has supported the most -- the route of information, education and awareness-raising," said Eva Mart nez of Venezuela's Anti-Cancer Society.

On Thursday, which was observed by some as a worldwide anti-tobacco day, the Society distributed a poster that shows an ashtray with an office inside it, to support the international smoke-free workplace campaign.
