Yes, it was bitterly cold, but road surfaces were OK.

And with practically everyone owning a cell phone, you'd think accidents would get reported efficiently.

Not so Friday. More than 50 accidents were reported on I-290 and I-355. Most were fender benders, but one fatal accident contributed to a 4 1/2-hour logjam on a 10-mile stretch of I-290.

And, perhaps surprisingly, police and firefighters frequently had to look hard for the accidents that were being called in to them.
