Mercedes-Benz still has huge potential for growth in the United States, says Ernst Lieb, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA LLC.

How much? Lieb isn't willing to say. The German-born executive says he prefers to get the facts first - which is why he's talking with hundreds of Mercedes customers at informal dinners throughout the United States.

Lieb, 51, is no stranger to North America. In 1985 he joined Mercedes-Benz Canada and worked his way up to CEO in 1995. He was transferred to Australia in 2003 to head DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific Pty. Ltd.

Back in North America, Lieb is preparing Mercedes for the next-generation C class, due in August. Lieb was interviewed at Mercedes headquarters in Montvale, N.J., this month by Staff Reporter Diana T. Kurylko.

You had good sales through the first four months. Can you continue the pace for the rest of the year?

We said as early as January that 2007 will not be an easy year. We are replacing our C class - which was number one last year in the overall scope of things. Plus, 2006 was a good year with the S class and the GL introductions. We had real winners coming...
