The Chrysler group's plan to build a $700 million axle plant northeast of Detroit is bad news for North American axle suppliers.

The plant will supply Chrysler - no surprise there - and the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Vance, Ala.

Chrysler manufacturing chief Frank Ewasyshyn says the divorce of the Chrysler group from DaimlerChrysler will not affect the axle plant's ability to supply both automakers. The plant will open in Marysville, Mich., in 2010 and make 1.2 million axles a year.
