Mark Fields says the thick blue rubber band on his right wrist won't come off until Ford Motor Co. makes a profit. He has worn it almost from the day in October 2005 that he took over as president of the Americas.

As Ford struggles to stop a swollen river of red ink - the company lost $12.6 billion last year - the pressure is on Fields and his Way Forward plan, which calls for reducing the work force and shutting factories while rebuilding the product lineup.

Fields spoke with Editor David Sedgwick, Staff Reporter Richard Truett and News Editor Dave Guilford.

Ford has been cutting production, but has said it will bottom out this summer. Is that still the plan?

Yes. Our plan right now is in the second quarter to increase our production a little bit versus our original assumption. And that is really to adjust some stock imbalances that we have on some F-series trucks and the Focus in certain parts of the country. Because we took such a large production cut at the end of last year, in the fourth quarter, the year-over-year comparison will be favorable.
