Jim Press has broken Toyota's glass ceiling. After nearly 40 years working for Toyota's U.S. operations, Press was nominated in April to become the first non-Japanese to sit on Toyota Motor Corp.'s board of directors. The formal election will take place in June.

Press, 60, drove the company's rapid sales growth in the United States while in charge of Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. for several years. Since last year he has been president of Toyota Motor North America Inc., the holding company for Toyota's sales and manufacturing operations here. He will become a senior managing director at the parent company but will remain based in New York.

Press met with Automotive News editors and reporters April 26 in Detroit. Staff Reporter Mark Rechtin prepared this account of the interview.

Given Toyota's breakneck growth pace, can you increase your North American manufacturing fast enough to get closer to your goal of 60 percent local production?

Our ratio is on the lower side. But having said that, we'll have 2.2 million North American capacity in 2010. It is a significant number. It gets close to Chrysler. We are adding 600,000 units of U.S. production capacity between now and 2010.
