Saturn was the first to update UAW pact

To the Editor:

Saturnizing the UAW - your April 16 article "GM to UAW: Let's cut costs'' is the Saturn labor contract revisited.

In 1989, the Saturn UAW local union agreed to allow nonunion workers to perform janitorial work, building repair, drive-away and rail-car loading, yard work and in-plant parts handling at 40 percent of the UAW Saturn labor rate.

Shortly thereafter, those workers were organized and represented by the UAW through a card count. As a result, we formed an amalgamated local union with separate units and contracts. Improvements in the wage rate and the same benefits were negotiated that kept the total labor costs at 60 percent of the UAW Saturn hourly rate.

In addition, UAW Saturn workers had agreed to 10-hour shifts at straight time and overtime only after 40 hours of work. Production workers were organized into teams and rotated job assignments under one job classification at one pay rate.
