Until six months ago, if Nissan North America Inc. needed to have a stamping die from its Smyrna, Tenn., assembly plant chemically treated to make it last longer, it had to load the solid steel die onto a flatbed truck, haul it to Michigan and wait in line with other import brands.

"A day there and a day back - that's another two days that you have to run ahead on your production,'' said Thomas Collins III, manager of body and stamping engineering for Nissan's Smyrna plant. "It was a constant battle.''
