In its latest move downstream, Steel Dynamics Inc., Fort Wayne, Ind., has begun shipping prime material from its $27 million, 240,000 ton-a-year greenfield prepaint line adjacent to its cold rolled steel mill in Butler, Ind.

The 5 million to 6 million tons-per-year prepainted steel sector is a tough market with significant excess capacity. In fact, it has been undergoing a shakeout recently, largely because of depressed conditions in nonresidential construction, says Christopher Plummer, managing director of Metal Strategies Inc., West Chester, Pa. About 60 percent of all prepainted steel is used in construction, primarily nonresidential applications.

Mark Millett, SDI vice president and general manager, admits that prepainted steel has been experiencing some hard times, but he is optimistic this new line will be very successful. SDI is the only steel mill in North America to operate its own coil coater.

"Just about every product line we've entered has been very competitive, but we feel we can be one of the low-cost producers. We will have products that are at least equal in quality with the best products out there, while having a cost factor advantage," he claims.

The prepaint line--with the capability to paint 0.010-inch to 0.070-inch thick strip, 32 to 64 inches wide, in coils weighing up 32 tons, as fast as 600 feet per minute--is a good fit with SDI's overall business strategy, Plummer says.
