It's a strange sight: A small Honda Civic moving slowly down the assembly line behind a much larger Honda Ridgeline pickup.
Last month, Honda of Canada Manufacturing Inc. pulled off the improbable when it added the Civic compact car to the same assembly line that produces Honda's two largest vehicles - the Ridgeline and the Acura MDX SUV.
Honda has been methodically transforming its manufacturing plants in North America to be more flexible, and Alliston Plant 2 may be its most flexible yet.
Honda of Canada has been assembling the Civic here in Plant 1 since 1988. The Japanese automaker added the Civic to Plant 2 to help keep up with demand for the fuel-efficient car.
Ultimately, Honda wants to build the Civic in three North American factories: Alliston; East Liberty, Ohio; and next year in Honda's new assembly plant in Greensburg, Ind.
In April, Civic sales fell 6.7 percent in the United States to 29,155, compared with the same month a year ago....
