For years, the CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., Ikuo Mori, admired from afar Toyota Motor Corp.'s vaunted production system and profit machine.

But since Toyota became a major Fuji Heavy investor in 2005, one of Japan's smallest automakers and its only U.S. manufacturing outpost have gained a competitive edge. Last month Fuji began assembling the Toyota Camry at a plant in Indiana in the first project between the two Japanese automakers.

The time required to conceive and execute the project - roughly a year - broke records for both companies. It provided insights for Subaru as it embarks on a global business plan.

"The speed with which (Toyota) makes decisions is impressive. And in the area of logistics, production management and control, they have no equal,'' Mori said last month after the two companies celebrated the Camry launch here.
